The U.S. ambassador to Panama has resigned on principle in the wake of President Trump’s “shithole” comments about Haiti and Africa in the Oval Office, according to a report, though an Associated Press diplomacy reporter said the resignation had been announced prior to the Trump remarks.

John Feeley wrote in a resignation letter to the State Department that he can no longer serve the Trump administration, according to Reuters.

The State Department confirmed the departure, saying Feeley has decided to “retire for personal reasons, as of 9 March this year.”

Feeley was nominated to the diplomatic post by then–President Obama in July 2015.

The Marine Corps veteran flew amphibious assault helicopters in and over Lebanon in the mid-1980s following the 1983 bombing of the Marine Barracks in Beirut.
