Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Tom Petty died last year because of an accidental overdose, a coroner’s report just out has shown.

Petty died in October after he suffered a cardiac arrest at his Malibu home and was put on life support. He was 66.

The coroner’s findings showed Petty had a mix of prescription painkillers, sedatives and an antidepressant in his system, including fentanyl and oxycodone. An accidental overdose of fentanyl was also determined to have killed the singer Prince in April 2016.

Petty’s accidental overdose occurred on the same day the rocker found out his hip was broken after performing some 50 shows with a less serious injury, his family said. Petty’s wife, Dana, and daughter, Adria, released the results of the autopsy via a statement Friday on his Facebook page and the Tom Petty website.

“On the day he died he was informed his hip had graduated to a full on break and it is our feeling that the pain was simply unbearable and was the cause for his over use of medication,” his family’s statement said.

“As a family we recognize this report may spark a further discussion on the opioid crisis and we feel that it is a healthy and necessary discussion and we hope in some way this report can save lives,” they said. “Many people who overdose begin with a legitimate injury or simply do not understand the potency and deadly nature of these medications.”

Government figures released in December showed that for the first time, the powerful painkiller fentanyl and its close opioid cousins played a bigger role in the deaths than any other legal or illegal drug, surpassing prescription pain pills and heroin, the Associated Press reported.

Petty made his name in the 1970s and 1980s with the group Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. He is one of the most successful rock singers of all time, selling 80 million albums worldwide.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, which inducted Petty and the Heartbreakers in 2002, praised them as “durable, resourceful, hardworking, likable and unpretentious.”
